Leader
•Leader is a person who sets goals for his/her people or teammates, and then leads or rallies them to achieve those goals.
•Napoleon Bonaparte as cited in Definitions of Leadership by Scholars (2019) said, “A leader is a dealer in hope.”
Intelligence
•A very general mental capability that, among other things, involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from experience. It is not merely book learning, a narrow academic skill, or test-taking smarts. Rather, it reflects a broader and deeper capability for comprehending our surroundings — “catching on”, “making sense” of things, or “figuring out” what to do. (MAINSTREAM SCIENCE ON INTELLIGENCE, 1994)
Grit
•Grit is defined as passion and perseverance for achieving long-term goals and consists of two proposed subcomponents: consistency of interests and perseverance of effort. (Duckworth, 2021).
Growth Mindset
•Growth mindset is defined as a belief that construes intelligence as malleable and improvable. Students with growth mindset are likely to learn by a mastery approach, embrace challenges and put in effort to learn. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” ( Dweck, 2015)
Now! How are Leaders Made not Born?
Let’s us first define the following term: Tabula rasa
Tabula rasa: is the idea of individuals being born empty of any built-in mental content, so that all knowledge comes from later perceptions or sensory experiences
Locke in the 17th Century in in his philosophy research states that all human being are born with a blank mind that can only be corrupted by the society.
Psychologists and neurobiologists have shown evidence that initially, the entire cerebral cortex is programmed and organized to process sensory input, control motor actions, regulate emotion, and respond reflexively (under predetermined conditions). These programmed mechanisms in the brain subsequently act to learn and refine the ability of the organism.
The fact that there is need for certain educational qualifications qualifies the idea that leaders are made not born
In arrange to be a good leader, one must have the experience, knowledge, commitment, persistence and importantly the expertise to arrange and work with others to attain objectives.
Great leadership is developed through a never finishing process of self-study, instruction, preparing and the accumulation of significant experience (Bass&Bass,2008).
According to Contigency theory, there’s no single right way to lead since the inner and outside measurements of the environment that requires the leader to adjust to that specific situation
The skills theory of leadership emphasizes that knowledge acquired through learning and experience is an important factor which is very crucial for undertaking effective leadership practice. A strong conviction in skills theory often states that considerable effort and resources can be committed to leadership training and improvement (Wolinski, 2010).
Leaders made have principles: Let’s look at the following.
Principles of Leaders Made.
- They know themselves and seek self-improvement
- They are technically proficient: They know their job
- They seek responsibility and take responsibility of their actions
- They learn to make sound and timely decisions
- They set examples
- They know people and lookout for their well-being
- They keep people informed
- They help develop sense of responsibility in their people.
- They make sure that tasks are understood, supervised and accomplished
- They train people as a team, develop them and seek help where it is needed
Summary
Great leadership is developed through a never finishing process of self-study, instruction, preparing and the accumulation of significant experience
