Restraining from Harm, Embracing Holiness

Theme: “Listen to the Holy Spirit, Restrain from Evil, and Uphold One Another in Righteousness”
Opening Reflection

  1. The Holy Spirit always speaks what is good, pure, and life-giving.
  2. Yet, human nature often resists this voice and instead chooses paths that lead to harm and regret.
  3. As we gather here at ACTV HQ, we are reminded that our words, actions, and decisions affect not only ourselves but also our colleagues, families, and communities.

Scriptural Foundation: Genesis 42:21-23

“They said to one another, ‘Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen. That’s why this distress has come on us.’ Reuben replied, ‘Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood.’ They did not realize that Joseph could understand them, since he was using an interpreter.”

This passage reveals three key truths:

a). Guilt from past wrongdoing resurfaces – sin against others brings lasting consequences.
b). Ignoring warnings leads to suffering – had they listened to Reuben, they would have avoided pain.
c). God sees and remembers – even when we think no one understands, God is aware and holds us accountable.

    Theological Insights
a). Augustine of Hippo once said, “Sin is believing the lie that you are self-created, self-dependent, and self-sustained.” When we ignore the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we fall into this lie and harm ourselves and others.
b). John Stott wrote, “The Christian’s responsibility is not only to avoid evil but to restrain others from it, for we are our brother’s keeper.”
c). Dietrich Bonhoeffer warned, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

Key Lessons for ACTV HQ Members
a). Listen to the Holy Spirit – He always whispers truth and righteousness. Train your heart to obey promptly.
b). Restrain from Harmful Actions – Before plotting, speaking, or acting in anger, pause and seek God’s counsel.
c). Correct and Restrain Others with Love – Speak up when you see a colleague straying, not with judgment but with restorative truth.
d). Cultivate a Culture of Accountability – Encourage openness, confession, and correction, so that no one carries silent guilt like Joseph’s brothers.

Practical Steps to Embrace This Culture

      • Prayerful Decision-Making: Before major actions, invite the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
      • Open Communication: Create safe spaces for colleagues to warn and correct one another.
      • Moral Mentorship: Older and more experienced members should guide younger ones in righteousness.
      • Forgiveness and Restoration: When wrongs are identified, seek reconciliation rather than harboring guilt.

      Closing Exhortation
Let us remember that the Holy Spirit’s voice is always for our good.

      • Like Joseph’s brothers, we may sometimes fail to listen, but today we have a chance to choose a different path.
      • May ACTV HQ be a place where evil is restrained, righteousness is upheld, and every member becomes a guardian of truth and love.

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21)
